A good night for a stunning lunar eclipse. Mostly clear skies, warm, and a big bag of very buttery popcorn. It has been a while since all the conditions were right for such an astronomical event.

Anyone else watching this amazing lunar eclipse? Much of the time, astronomical events are clouded out here in Ithaca, NY, but not tonight. And I am taking full advantage and pushing myself past my bedtime hoping to see the full lunar eclipse soon.

Mother’s day is difficult for me since my mother

Mother’s day is difficult for me since my mother died 2 years ago. I assume this is true for many other folks, that Mother’s day brings sadness and longing. I hope you feel some solace and healing.
It took me a few days to write this, as I needed to process my feelings. Sylvia (my mom) is missed by me every day.
I am not much of a sports fan, but my mom (and sister) are Mets fans, so I have been wearing this t-shirt, which was my mom’s, for the past few days. I appreciate feeling her against my skin, heart, and lungs. I don’t mind the tears; they remind me how much I cared for this person who birthed me and put up with my shenanigans. We continued to grow, continually trying to accept the persons we have become.
I miss you, mom. Thank you for listening, caring, and helping me continue to grow into myself. You are loved. ~7Song

A True Shaggy Dog Story I was at the Grove Plantat

A True Shaggy Dog Story
I was at the Grove Plantation on Edisto Island, SC, and saw this lovely dragonfly munching on some critter. I wanted to get a good close-up and perhaps a video. If you have ever tried to photograph a dragonfly, you know that they often don’t sit still. With their wrap-around compound eyes, they have excellent vision and move quickly when you get close. But every once in a while, one will sit still, even as one moves closer to take the photo. And that was happening with this dragonfly. I was slowly belly-crawling on gravel to get the close-up and as I was getting ever closer, I noticed a shaggy dog coming my way along the path, looking super friendly. I knew that as it got closer the dragonfly would take off. So, I tried a few hand gestures to ward off the pup, but to no avail (I did not want the gestures to be too dramatic, as that would also freak out the dragonfly). But of course, the dog came right to me, and the dragonfly left to eat its meal in a more peaceable situation.
The dog was friendly, but after a long while it seemed to be alone, so I called the number on its tag and left a message, eventually hearing back that it was a neighbor’s dog that liked to venture on its own.
At least I got a photo of the Anoles mating before the dog showed up. 7Song, April 18, 2022

And this is an Eastern pondhawk dragonfly (Erythemis simplicicollis).
