This is my first Mother’s Day without my mother.

This is my first Mother’s Day without my mother. It is a hard one, for me, for my siblings, and for all of us who miss our moms.
Here is what I am thankful for–that my mom lived long enough for me to fully appreciate her. It took a while, to get past the internalized relationship boundaries, and to see her more as a whole person. And I suppose, for her to see me.
All humans are complex and familial relationships multiple those complexities.
There are numerous ways my mother helped me grow as a human. An important one was her openness for me to follow a non-conventional path. While she was nervous that herbal medicine would not support me financially, she did not discourage me from studying it. And once she realized that I was in deep, she would send me articles with a positive spin on herbal medicine. She went from skeptical to proud, and for this alone, I love her deeply.
Tears well up quickly and abundantly and the world is a sadder and lonelier place without my mom. But I am glad for the time we had together.
I hope all of you in a similar situation have support and love around you.

More surprises. This is the first time I have ever

More surprises. This is the first time I have ever seen a Common morel mushroom (Morchella esculenta) growing around my home. There are two of them growing in the Jerusalem artichoke (Helianthus tuberosa) patch.

I’ve often wondered why I have this patch of Jerusalem artichokes, as I didn’t plant them there. While they are pretty, and their tubers are edible, they spread quickly and crowd out other plants.
But somehow the Morels have found their way into their domain. I hope there are more to come. Ithaca. NY. May 7, 2021
