Last year, I visited Jam Pond in German, NY for the first time. While there, I got excited to bring my students there this year, which I did yesterday. It is one of my favorite bogs for a few reasons. First, it is local (about an hour for Ithaca). Next, it is not visited often, so it is people free (unless you come the day I bring students). And it is beautiful. You are also very likely to sink up to your waist on a regular basis as you navigate amongst the flora while walking on the sphagnum mosses. And among the moss are orchids (3 species), Pitcher plants (Sarracenia purpurea), Sundew (a few Drosera species), Leatherleaf (Chamaedaphne calyculata), Bog rosemary (Andromeda polifolia), and other bog-associated plants.
Before going, I had warned the students that they will likely get all mucked up and to bring a change of clothes for the ride home. And to go barefoot, or you are likely to lose your shoes.
I don’t know precisely why bogs hold such appeal to me, but they surely do.

One of the common names of this plant is ‘Bear corn’, which I have often wondered about. The botanical name is Conopholis americana, and it is in the Orobanchaceae. After my recent time with Doug Elliot, I learned that bears dig up the roots after coming out of hibernation, which piqued my curiosity even more. So when I next came into a patch of it, I decided to take a closer look at this plant. It is parasitic (it does not make its own chlorophyll) and generally grows on the roots of Oak and Beech trees. I opened up one of the fruits and was surprised to see it full of small seeds. While I have heard of medicinal uses for this plant, I have not used it yet, but perhaps one day, when I understand its properties better. ~7Song, Ithaca, NY. July 17, 2021.
