Here we are, the 2020 Herbal Weekend Program. This is our second time meeting in person. Covid of course has brought many challenges to meeting, but I found a building near my home (the school) where we could sit far enough part for the inside class time as my classroom is too small to meet at this stage of the pandemic.
It is a beautiful weekend weather-wise, and even more lustrous with the fall colors coming on.
The Red oak (Quercus rubra) in the photo is one of the largest in the area, and I am assuming it is at least 150-200 years old. It is one of the trees that makes one an inadvertent tree hugger.

Today the Herbal Weekend Program (now meeting in person for the second time) went on a beautiful autumn day hike to Monkey Run in Varna, NY (near Ithaca). This spot is one of my favorites as it is generally a surprise when we come to this cliff ledge along the walk. It is also just a darn pretty sight. September 26, 2020.

I have now joined the Fire Cider Club and made my first ‘official’ fire cider. (Shh, don’t tell anyone, but I have been soaking hot peppers in vinegar as a condiment for many years). At first, I was going to add a lot more ingredients (7 ingredients for 7Song, etc), but I often find that I get carried away and prefer the taste of a simpler version.
Here is the unembellished label. Hot-But-Not-Too-Hot Fire Cider. A base of Cayenne (Capsicum sp) infused vinegar. Horseradish roots (Armoracia rusticana), Shallots (Allium cepa), Jalapeños (Capsicum annuum) and Garlic (Allium sativum). All Ingredients Fresh & from HHG or Friends’ Gardens. Ithaca, NY. The lovely and tasty plant Cucumber root (Medeola virginiana, Liliaceae) in fruit. The rhizome is one of the tastiest wild foods I know. A sweet-but-not-too-sweet taste and excellent crispness. I don't eat too many, as they are not that common around here, but I will eat one or two of the rhizomes when I find a good-sized patch. Dryden, NY. September 24, 2020

So Sensitive
The brown patch is Sensitive fern (Onoclea sensibilis), a common fern in the Northeastern US. How sensitive you ask? Well, to frost, the fronds (‘leaves’) are very sensitive. We had one mild frost last night and the fronds were quashed. The plant (like all ferns) is perennial and will be back come spring.
But in other ways, this plant is not so sensitive. I commonly mow it and it comes right back up. And it can put up with getting trod upon as well.
The wand-like fertile fronds often stay upright for much of the winter adding some dash to the snowy landscape. Roy Park, Freeville, NY. September 19, 2020.
